Balìa literally means “at the mercy of” in Italian. The figure I carved on this pencil is a wannabe stylite. Unfortunately, he was not allowed to meditate on one of the ancient columns stylites sit on, due to his lack of purpose. He then decided to go and meditate on a big nutshell. He spent his whole life swinging in all directions as a consequence of the blowing wind. Balìa represents how I see some people, or even myself, in tough periods: individuals at the mercy of their own emotions, swinging from one side to the other without any purpose or logic, in response to external happenings.
